With warm weather coming, it is time to start thinking about getting a tan. Having all of your tanning supplies in the same bag will be a time-saver when you are ready to dash off and soak up the sun. A few minutes now saves time searching for tanning supplies later.
Making a special bag is one way to keep all your tanning supplies together. It is also a way to save money, recycle used clothing and get a cool new bag to carry tanning supplies in without leaving the house. A one of a kind bag will also be easier to spot at the beach, lake or tanning salon.
Gather a few supplies for your project. Select an old cotton tank top that is too small or that you no longer wear. Try to find one made of heavy duty cotton. Do not use a tank top made of material that is too stretchy or it may stretch out too much when you place full bottles of tanning supplies inside. If you do not have a tank top, a cotton T-shirt will also work. You will also need some straight pins, a pair of sewing shears, thread and a sewing machine. If you do not have access to a sewing machine, a needle and some heavy-duty thread will do. Even if you do not sew much this project is easy enough for any one.
Turn the shirt inside out and pin the bottom hem together with the straight pins. Line it up as even as possible, but do not worry too much as this seam will be inside the bag. You want to finish quickly and start filling your bag with tanning supplies.
Sew the bottom of the shirt together using at least a quarter of an inch seam allowance. If you use a sewing machine, back-stitch a few times to make the seam extra strong so tanning supplies do not fall through. If you are sewing by hand, double knot your thread and make the stitches as small and even as you can. If your shirt is bigger than you want your bag to be, you can make the seam allowance bigger, or cut off some of the hem, re-pin and sew.
Take out the straight pins and turn the bag right-side out. Now is the time to cut the sleeves into straps if you are using a T-Shirt. Just do not cut the straps too thin. You do not want the handles to break when you fill your bag with tanning supplies. You will not need to cut straps if you are using a tank top, your handles are already made. Cut off any ribbing around the opening of the neck to make the bag's opening bigger.
If you do not have the necessary supplies at home to make a bag for tanning supplies, try stopping at the local thrift shop or Goodwill. Neighborhood yard sales can also yield hidden treasures. A mesh tank top is the perfect garment to create a beach bag to hold tanning supplies. You just may find one at a sale.
Now gather all your tanning supplies and put them in your bag. Do not forget sunscreen, tanning lotion or spray, a towel, a water bottle, a good book or magazine to read, a sunhat, and some tunes. Throw in a few snacks if you want.
