How To Use Pool Chlorine Effectively

By Odessa Edwards

The weather is starting to warm up nicely as Summer rapidly approaches, and people are starting to plan on how to keep cool. For some this involves getting their own swimming pool. Also on their shopping lists should be everything that they will need to maintain it in good order. Possibly the most vital chemical that they will be using is pool chlorine. This can be bought in a variety of forms.

The most common delivery form that people will see is in the block form. This is a combination treatment that will release the correct amount of chemicals over a period of time, which helps to take the guess work out of things. Another common delivery method is using granules or powder. Depending on the pool size and water volume a person can calculate just how much powder needs to be added.

A liquid version is also available, but is not recommended for novices. Most often this is used by public swimming baths or professional maintenance concerns. Quite often you will notice that the public baths will remain closed during this chlorination process, this is due to the high likelihood that gases will also be in evidence. Remember that, as with all chemicals, to make sure that they are securely stored out of the reach of children

It is probably safe to say that everyone has been to a public or school swimming batch at some point in their life. Therefore everyone will be aware of that particular odour linked to such establishments. This is due to the chlorine fumes that they are smelling. The chemical is dissolved in the water to kill any harmful bacteria.

The difficult part is trying to get the correct levels added, if you make it too strong it acts just like a bleach. Even at the correct levels it still discolors your swimwear. Those with sensitive skin should exercise more caution as they might blister if the solution is too strong, or at least develop the all too familiar red eyes. So apart from the new equipment and chemicals a highly recommended purchase is a tester kit. The instructions for use are very easy to follow and give an indication as to the water quality.

For everything to work well, water should have a pH level of between 7 and 8. The higher the pH number the less effective the chemicals are at killing off the harmful water borne bacteria. Ideally the pH level should be a steady reading between 7.2 and 7.6, if the balance is kept between these figures then your water maintenance task becomes that much simpler. It is worthwhile getting into the habit of checking your pool's water quality at least twice a week.

Algae is also an unwanted presence, and this chemical is responsible for the prevention of any growth. With the chemicals being dissolved in the water, it all becomes a big cleaning unit. As the water is pumped round, so the chemicals are also carried round. Any algae or bacteria that the chemicals come into contact with are neutralised.

So as you can see the pool chlorine is one of the most important chemicals used in maintaining water quality. As with any chemical it does need to be used properly. When used in conjunction with the testing kits, maintaining a healthy swimming environment becomes a simple process.
