Chiropractic Care For Relief Of Neck Pain

By Thomas Idaw

Most of us feel body pain at some point during our lives and for many people this pain is concentrated in the neck. Few things are as uncomfortable as neck pain because it often does not subside on its own. Since the neck is difficult to reach, the sufferer may not be able to relieve the pain. When this happens, professional treatment is recommended and in the United States, a doctor of chiropractic usually performs adjustments of neck and cervical spine vertebrae.

Statistics reveal that 75 percent of Americans suffer from pain in the neck area at least once. This should be no surprise because the head weighs approximately ten to 12 pounds, about the weight of a bowling ball. Each inch of forward posture of the head can increase the weight of the head on the spine by as much as ten pounds. Therefore, only a two or three-inch forward head posture can make the head seem to weigh the equivalent of two to three bowling balls. This explains why many people whose forward head posture is not optimal commonly suffer from pain in their necks and upper backs.

Two common treatment options include spinal manipulative therapy and prescription medication. However, these two treatments have been shown to not be equally effective. A study reported in the January 2012 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine research journal compared medication prescription treatment with spinal manipulative therapy revealing that spinal manipulation was more favorable over both the short and long-terms. After 12 weeks of treatment, 57 percent of the participants who received manipulative therapy reported pain reduction of at least 75 percent. Just one-third of participants taking prescription medication reported similar results.

After one year, the patients who received manipulation of the spine continued to enjoy benefits. Of that group, 53 percent continued to report at least a 75 percent improvement of their pain. These impressive results reveal the promise held by spinal manipulation therapy for the reduction of pain in the neck area. Chiropractic treatments are administered in a comfortable office setting over a time frame determined by the condition and the pain level of the patient.

When seeking care from a chiropractor, it is important to select a reputable professional. Look for an experienced doctor of chiropractic who specializes in treating neck pain. The neck, also called the cervical spine, contains a number of structures and tissues that are both delicate and sensitive to pain so careful treatment by any professional is required. Chiropractors are highly qualified to provide expert care for conditions of mechanical neck pain.

Chiropractic procedures are designed to address the actual cause, not merely the symptoms, of neck problems. Chiropractic care is noninvasive, effective, natural, and is considered very safe. Many patients begin to notice improvement within a few chiropractic treatments while the recovery period of others is more gradual.

When pain in the neck area becomes unbearable, consider chiropractic care. Speak with a chiropractic professional about the condition and learn about relevant options of treatment. With the proper approach, relief of pain will be gained and experienced over the long-term. Don't persist in being one of the more than ten percent of Americans currently suffering from neck pain.
