Most people understand that massage therapy is a very effective recovery tool for athletes and to help those everyday aches and pains go away. However, not everyone is aware of the different types of massages available and the benefits of each. There are many different types of massage, some that have been around for centuries, which can be both relaxing and beneficial.

A basic massage is typically known as the Swedish massage and is one of the first techniques created. The technique starts with long swipes followed by successive shorter swipes, which aids the blood flow to the muscles. When receiving a Swedish massage, this offers healing as well as relaxation without getting deep into the muscle tissue.

To really get the blood flowing, a deep tissue massage is in order, as this technique goes deep into the muscles. This is one of the most healing of all of the massage techniques and a favorite among athletes. It is used for chronic pain and strains to muscles. This particular type of massage can take some getting used to, but will relax the body and alleviate pain.

It is common knowledge that smells can affect the way we think and feel, which is why aromatherapy is so popular. It can also be used during massage therapy to create a feeling for the person who is receiving the massage. Typically, the massage oil has the scent that offers the properties that the client is looking for during the massage. This can range from helping them to relax or sleep at night to using massage as a way of energizing the body.

Not everyone cares about aromatherapy nor do they want to have a deep tissue massage that can be considered more painful than relaxing by some. There is a lighter massage treatment called hot stone massage that offers a more relaxing and calming feeling for the body. Heat is used to increase the circulation as the warm stones are placed on muscle groups and in some cases, there is light pressure applied.

There are many different types of massage therapy that offer a wide variety of healing properties. The Swedish massage is the most commonly known, but there are obviously other types of massage that can help each person based upon their needs. However, it is always recommended to discuss the best type of massage with your therapist or doctor before scheduling your first appointment.
