The Development Of Barrel Races

By Anne Kelley

Those who have witnessed barrel races could not help but admire the skills of competitors. One could not help but wonder how such events originated. What is more surprising is that the competitors are mostly women. Knowing how it developed will help one admire more such sports.

When it comes to the period when it originated, not much is known. However, one thing ca be ascertained, that it traces around 1930s. During that period, women are more empowered to display their horsemanship skills to level those of men. However, the sports is more dominated with men. These are rodeo shows. The Texas state was the place where the barrel race began. Women created their own events by using obstacles which horses have to run around.

Throughout the second World War, women rodeo events were increasing in popularity. However, it became overshadowed when men dominated again in this sports such as roping and bronc riding. It is commonly believed that the pattern of cloverleaf emerged on 1935. However, there was another judging criteria. It was only around 1949 when Girl Rodeo Association was formed making the rules. This was renamed during 1981 and is known as Women Professional Rodeo Association now.

This event could be organized focusing on it only or as a part of a rodeo or horse show. It has become highly competitive as it involves horses with extreme athletic ability and a rider with unparalleled horsemanship skills. They compete for the fastest record maneuvering in clover leaf patterns around barrels arranged triangularly inside arenas.

The usual time being clocked in modern races is generally around fifteen seconds. The record holder has completion rate of 13.52 seconds. The name of that record holder is Brandie Halls who accomplished that feat on 2006. Most groups will also require racers to wear attires such as boots, long sleeve shirts, and hats. Players losing their hats during games will be fined.

The competition, though fast and simple is so tough on horses. Hence, special breeding is needed. Some of these horses will have to travel long miles before joining events. If the horse does not have the needed stamina, he would then be too tired upon reaching events. An industry of horse breeding arouse to answer to this need unlike the former days when horses that were used were rejects from other horse events.

With the passage of time, it evolved into a woman focused sport. However, some groups allow men also. There are associations and clubs to be found now that offer interested youth training in this sports. Given its popularity, the sport is finding its way to being a family oriented one where not only women focus on it.

This sport has traveled a long way already considering how much it has progressed from fairly simple beginnings. Unlike the former years when it was done as an alternative sport for women, it has now gone into a serious sport that even men are seeing the thrill of it and are joining them already. Horses are now specially bred just for this sport and riders give their best and exert much time and effort just to excel in this area.

Barrel races, be it on its own or as part of rodeo events, surely attracts attention. Horse lovers who witness such events are sure their expectations are met. From being a pastime to a serious event, more growth is expected from this in the future.
